So over the past three weeks I've traveled to three different cities and was expecting to see a little more a difference in speech that i heard but to my surprise I encountered no great differences. The weekend before Spring Break I was in Nashville. There you encounter what could be called a pretty strong southern accent but as for many different words or word uses I didn't find any. The next weekend I was in Atlanta. There I encountered a much more southern accent than in Nashville but still not any differences in word choice. The following week I was in the most exciting city of my journey where I expected to find at least some difference. This city was Anaheim, California. I expected that by crossing the country I would find some sort of change in word use. Accents had definitely changed but that was about it. Now in no means am I saying that differences don't exist, I just didn't encounter any of them. This is probably because I was only in each city for two or three days and my interaction with the locals was not nearly as in depth as I would have liked it to be. It just struck me that I didn't see any differences in the language throughout my trips across the country.
So in my class following this one we were talking about new words that people had just recently heard. Someone mentioned skeet shooting which led to a short discussion about how many people didn't know exactly what it was. I just found it very interesting after we just talked about skeet shooting in our class
I was watching a movie earlier tonight and I heard the line "all things come to those who wait". It came to thought that this was a very wise saying. I began to ponder what category this saying would fit into. I believe that it would best be classified as an idiom but also could be classified as a cliche. It is an idiom because of its difficulty being translated because it carries more meaning than just the sum of its parts.
So its been a full week of class now and we've got a pretty good grasp on how the class is going to be. So far it seems to be pretty interesting and i hope it continues to be so. The group work we've been doing keeps the class on task and involved which is more than I can say about some of my other classes. So far my only complaint is that all of the bookstores are sold out of the book. That makes keeping up with the work kinda difficult. Luckily I bought my book online and it will be here very shortly.
Here's my first post for Lin 318. Hopefully this will be an interesting class.
